     What is a library for? Most libraries have books and other things to read. Many of them  have things

to listen to. Some libraries even have computers. Very few people would think of a library as a place to

live in.

自从矮凳桥兴起了纽扣市场，专卖纽扣的商店和地摊，糙算也有了六百家。早年间，湖广客人走到县城，就是不远千里的稀客了。没有人会到矮凳桥来的，翻这个锯齿山做什么？本地土产最贵重的不过是春茶冬笋，坐在县城里收购就是了。现在，纽扣——祖公爷决料不着的东西——却把北至东三省、内蒙古，南到香港的客人都招来了。接着，街上开张了三十多家饮食店，差不多五十步就有一家。这些饮食店门口，讲究点的有个玻璃阁子，差点的就是个摊子，把成腿的肉、成双的鸡鸭、花蚶港蟹、会蹦的虾、吱吱叫的鲜鱼……全摆到街面上来，做实物招牌，摊子里面一点，汤锅蒸锅热气蒸腾，炒锅的油烟弥漫。这三十多家饮食，把这六百家的纽扣，添上了开胃口吊舌头的色、香、味，把成条街都引诱到喝酒吃肉过年过节的景象里。

拿实物做广告，真正的招牌倒不重要了。有的只写上个地名：矮凳桥饭店。有的只取个吉利：隆盛酒楼。取得雅的，也只直白地叫做味雅餐馆。惟独东口溪边有一家门口，横挂匾额，上书“鱼非鱼小酒家”，可算得特别。

这里只交代一下这个店名的由来，不免牵扯到一些旧人旧事，有些人事还扯不清，只好零零碎碎听凭读者自己处理也罢。
