与西方小说有所不同的是，中国小说自始至终都分为雅俗两个系统。雅系统基本上使用古体文言写作，是文人士大夫精神情操和审美趣味的表现形式；俗系统基本上使用古体白话写作，是市民阶层生活趣味的表达途径。由这两个系统所决定，各自派生出本系统的价值标准、审美取向和表现形式。
