与航空业日新月异的科技发展不同，飞机上的黑匣子（电子飞行数据记录仪）却是上世纪60年代的发明。50年虽然在可靠性等方面不断改进，但原理一直没有大变化，有时搜寻非常困难。

为了便于能在空难事故发生后迅速被找到，黑匣子通常会被漆成醒目的橘红色或是火红色。黑匣子包括两部分，飞行数据记录仪（FDR）和舱声录音器（CVR）。这两个部件通常也不安装在一起，以波音客机为例，飞行数据仪通常被安装在机位的顶端，舱声录音器则安装在飞机机尾右侧、距货舱门1米左右的位置。这样的位置设计，是为了保护和降低两个部件同时受损的概率。

FDR记录飞行速度、高度、垂直加速度和燃油流量等数据，大型飞机上的固态存储器可追踪700多个参数，保存25小时的飞行数据。CVR不仅记录机组人员之间的对话以及他们与塔台的对话，还记录可向调查人员提供关键线索的背景噪音，但通常只能保存两小时的驾驶舱声音记录，并循环录制。

黑匣子装有水下定位信标，一旦其感应器接触到水，就开始发射脉冲信号，每秒发射一次“ping”信号，共发射30天，然后电池就没电了。2009年法航447航班失事后，黑匣子未能及时找到。一直到2011年4月，无人深潜器发现了大西洋底4000米处的飞机残骸，进而从残骸中起获了黑匣子。
