嘉庆十九年,淮南州县旱饥。含山滨江之乡,有铜城闸镇者,岁比有秋,邻县饥民扶老襁幼就食者数千人。乡人大惊,为阖户罢市,自门隙之。众无所得食,益汹汹。处士过实圃先生恐有变,亟出慰之曰:“诸君饥求食,当谋所以食尔,请与诸父老议之。”明日集里中好善者,富出财,贫输力,自倡巨赀,绸缪经纪,张席隙地以居之;老羸妇孺,计口赋食;佣其壮者于四乡农户,俾自食其力;寒有襦,病有药,殁有棺,孕且育者厚赒之;给以旷壤,课对蔬菜;储水具,警火灾。其冬,山乡得雨。遗丁壮以所得佣值,归而种麦,麦熟,乃各挈妇子归,欢声彻衢巷。呼曰:“善人,善人。”由是四方至者,皆知有过善人云。

余同年友竹潭孝廉,先生孙也。光绪五年正月,竹潭手一册,请余书其事;且述先生训曰:“吾家仅万金产,以振饥耗其半。次年,岁大穰,粜谷倍蓗利,遂复其初。人何惮而不为善哉!”余谓此先生勉子孙为善之言耳。若豫存获报之心,则计较得失,必不能破产以求仁;即勉之,而报非可必得,将遂不振人之急乎?彼其时但以活人为心耳,虽尽耗其产何虑!惟然,故仁术无不周,而泽之被人者弘;卒受天佑,其产可复,而其后必昌,报施之理然也。嗟夫!方饥氓索食汹汹,人以引避为智,相率闭拒,则彼计无复之,势将剽夺,一乡被其患,而过氏无独全之理。先生挺然以一身肩其任,弭变之智与恤难之仁兼至,究亦无损于其家。故知存计较得失之心者,公与私两失;去计较得失之心者,公与私两得。通是义也,虽任天下事可也。

过先生讳华,字曙初,号实圃。他行多可述者,非大义所存,故不着。
