中国人丑陋吗?

国民性是文化学最深层的问题之一。对于作家来说，国民性则是一种集体性格。作家的天性是批判的，所以笔下的国民性自然是国民性的负面，即劣根性。鲁迅先生的重要成就是对中国人国民劣根性的揭示；柏杨先生在《丑陋的中国人》所激烈批评的也是中国人国民性的负面。应该说，他们都不是进行严谨而逻辑的理性剖析，而是凭着作家的敏感与尖锐，随感式却一针见血地刺中国民性格中的痼疾。鲁迅用这种国民集体性格的元素塑造出中国小说人物画廊中前所未有的人物形象——阿Q。当然，鲁迅先生也把这种国民性批判写在他许多杂文中。柏杨则认为杂文更可以像“匕首一样”直插问题的“心脏”。故而柏杨没有将国民性写入小说。

这使我想起从19世纪下半期到20世纪初的“传教士文学”——到中国来传教的西方教

士所写的见闻。传教士出于对异文化的好奇，热衷于对中国文化形态进行描述。他们笔下中国人的劣根性是相当复杂的。有善意的批评，有文化误解，也有轻蔑和贬损。特别是后者，与西方殖民者傲慢的心态相关。由于人们对鸦片战争以后那段屈辱的历史刻骨铭心，所以很少有人直面这些出自西方人笔下的批评。

然而我们对自我的批评为什么也不能接收呢?是鲁迅和柏杨所言荒谬，还是揭疤揭得大

狠?不狠不痛，焉能触动。其实任何国家和地域的集体性格中都有劣根。指出劣根，并不等于否定优根。应该说，揭示劣根，剪除劣根，正是要保存自己民族特有的优良的根性。

我们对国民的劣根性的反省始自“五四”以来。一方面由于国门打开，中西接触，两种文化不同，便有了比较。另一方面，由于在中西的碰撞中，中国一直处于弱势。有责任感的知识分子面对这种软弱与无奈，苦苦寻求解脱，一定会反观自己，追究自己之所以不强的深在于自身的缘故。这便从社会观察到文化观察，从体制与观念到国民性，然而从文化视角观察与解析国民性需要非凡的眼光，用批评精神将国民性格的痼疾揭示出来需要勇气。所以我一直钦佩柏杨先生的这种批评精神与勇气。尤其是这个充满自责和自警的题目——丑陋的中国人——多容易被误解呀!但是只要我们在这些激烈的自责中能够体会一位作家对民族的爱意，其所言之“丑陋”便会开始悄悄地转化。

如今，中国正以惊人的速度走向繁荣。繁荣带来的自信使我们难免内心膨胀。似乎我们不再需要自省什么“丑陋不丑陋”了。然而一个真正的文明的民族，总要不断自我批评和自我完善，不管是穷是富。为此，柏杨先生这本令人深省的书该重新放在我们的案头。
