　　夫君之大，天也；其尊，神也；其威，雷霆也。人之不能抗天、触神、忤雷霆，亦明矣。圣人知其然，故立赏以劝之。传曰“兴王赏谏臣”，是也。犹惧其選耎^①阿谀，使一日不得闻其过，故制刑以威之。《书》曰“臣下不正，其刑墨”，是也。人之情，非病风丧心，未有避赏而就刑者，何苦而不谏哉？赏与刑不设，则人之情又何苦而抗天、触神、忤雷霆哉？自非性忠义，不悦赏，不畏罪，谁欲以言博死者？人君又安能尽得性忠义者而任之？
