送浮屠文畅师序

人固有儒名而墨行者,问其名则是,校其行则非,可以与之游乎?如有墨名而儒行者,问之名则非,校其行而是,可以与之游乎?扬子云称:“在门墙则挥之,在夷狄则进之。”吾取以为法焉。

浮屠师文畅喜文章,其周游天下,凡有行,必请于缙绅先生以求咏歌其所志。贞元十九年春,将行东南,柳君宗元为之请。解其装,得所得叙诗累百余篇,非至笃好,其何能致多如是邪?惜其无以圣人之道告之者,而徒举浮屠之说赠焉。夫文畅,浮屠也,如欲闻浮屠之说,当自就其师而问之,何故谒吾徒而来请也?彼见吾君臣父子之懿,文物事为之盛,其心有慕焉,拘其法而未能入,故乐闻其说而请之。如吾徒者,宜当告之以二帝三王之道,日月星辰之行,天地之所以著,鬼神之所以幽,人物之所以蕃,江河之所以流而语之,不当又为浮屠之说而渎告之也。

民之初生,固若禽兽夷狄然。圣人者立,然后知官居而粒食,亲亲而尊尊,生者养而死者藏。是故道莫大乎仁义,教莫正乎礼乐刑政。施之于天下,万物得其宜;措之于其躬,体安而气平。尧以是传之舜,舜以是传之禹,禹以是传之汤,汤以是传之文武,文武以是传之周公、孔子,书之于册,中国之人世守之。今浮屠者,孰为而孰传之邪?夫鸟俯而啄,仰而四顾;夫兽深居而简出,惧物之为己害也,犹且不脱焉。弱之肉,强之食。今吾与文畅安居而暇食,优游以生死,与禽兽异者,宁可不知其所自邪?

夫不知者,非其人之罪也;知而不为者,惑也;悦乎故不能即乎新者,弱也;知而不以告人者,不仁也;告而不以实者,不信也。余既重柳请,又嘉浮屠能喜文辞,于是乎言。
