  我觉得自己对中国、美国的教育哲学都有相当深入的认识。这两个教育哲学是相当不一样的,而这两个不同的教育哲学在怎样鼓励创新这件事情上的差异,是值得我们深思的。
  到底这两种教育哲学哪个好,哪个不好?这是一个非常复杂的问题,要用辩证的方法来仔细了解。我认为,这两教育哲学都能够鼓励创新,不过它们各自对不同类型的学生产生的最大效应是不一样的。我觉得,美国的教育哲学对排在前面的30%—40%的学生肯定是有益的。因为这些学生不需要按部就班地训练,他们可以跳跃式学习,给了他自由,他可以自己发展出很多东西,当然他的知识不可避免地会有很多漏洞,但如果他真是很聪明的话,将来他自己可以弥补这些漏洞。所以这种学生受到美国式的教育训练,会比较快、比较容易成功。可是,亚洲的教育哲学对排在后面的30%—40%的学生较有益处。为什么呢?因为这些学生通过按部就班的训练,可以成才,而且成才之后可以跟比他聪明的人竞争;因为他有扎扎实实的知识,可以了解很多不是几天就可以学会的东西。这方面我自己有亲身的体验。
  记得我刚到美国芝加哥大学念研究院,两三天后就看见很多同学都非常聪明,随便讲什么题目好像都知道,当时我觉得美国的同学很历害。可是过了两个月之后,我发现不是那么一回事了,因为他们对名词知道得很多,可以如果你连问他三个问题,他就回答不上来了。所以到了考试的时候,我们的分数比他们的好很多。
  回到刚才那个问题上,究竟哪一种教育哲学比较好呢?或者说,对于学生来讲,应该看重哪一种教育哲学?我最后得出的结论是:如果你在讨论的是一个美国学生,那就要鼓励他多学一些有规则的训练;如果讨论的是一个亚洲学生,他的教育是从亚洲开始的,那么就需要多鼓励他去挑战权威,以免他太胆怯。
