北极洲的“消失”

在远古严寒的冰河时期，有一种巨大的哺乳动物——猛犸象一直生活在西伯利亚至北极一带。它们是地球自有生命以来，在陆地上繁衍生活过的大型史前动物之一。

可是，北极地区不是被大洋覆盖的吗？猛犸象怎么能在北极地区生存呢？

草原？难道它铺在大洋的冰上吗？是的，但是冰不是现在这样的漂浮碎冰，而是巨大且完整的冰原。冰河期的温度急剧下降，北冰洋自然不可能没有反应，当时浮冰相互联结成巨大完整的冰原。也就是说，当时在北极地区虽然是海洋，但因冰原的覆盖形成了一块特殊的陆地。

人们通常把这种陆地称为“气候性陆地”。它形成的不是海洋性气候，而是变化剧烈的大陆性气候，冰河期的北极地区是联结在一起的漂浮的“冰封大陆”，人们称它为北极洲。

当时北极洲的气候是“超大陆性的”，这里经常形成“持续不断的”强大反气旋以及它所特有的无云天气，致使冬天十分寒冷。那时的猛犸象、麝牛、北极耗牛、北美野牛身上都披着一层厚而密的长毛，甚至能拖到地面。为了维持生命，它们身上降起的部位积存有大量脂肪。它们的食物便是那些未被冰雪覆盖的干草，当时干草到处都有，因为冰原上覆盖着一层土壤。可是这些土壤又是从哪儿来的呢？
