⑴城市的喧嚣沉寂了,车辆入库,路静人稀。左邻右舍的电视机、收音机也停了。当它们开着的时候,仿佛那从窗内射出来的灯光,也带着扰人的声音。单一的艺术声音是乐音,而各种艺术的声音同时参差不齐地传进耳朵里,比马路上前拥后挤的车辆的噪音,更让人难受。

⑵田园静寂的秋夜,也是有声音的,那就是遍地的虫鸣。蟋蟀、蝼蛄、蝈蝈,组成不同族类的合唱队。天愈凉,叫得愈响、愈热烈,像闭幕前的大合唱的高潮,又像告别演出。虫鸣夜更幽,没有虫鸣,感到的只是凄冷、单调。单调和喧嚣,同样能使人心里不平静。

⑶我喜欢充满虫声的深秋之夜。

⑷伴着虫声睡去,远远胜似催眠曲。

⑸伴着虫声夜读,书好像是活的。对的,“蟋蟀鸣吾床下”,几千年前诗人的感受,仍然活在这鸣声里。《聊斋志异•促织》里化为蟋蟀的小孩,不是正隔窗窥探,看你对他的悲惨遭遇有什么表示?这幻觉并不神秘,不是什么意识流、潜意识,是艺术和生活的对比而诱发出的联想力。读书不像出家人的念经,“心如枯井”,需要色彩的刺激,声音的刺激。它提醒你还有一个可爱的大地在。夜,正是大地的外衣。

⑹伴随着虫声思索,烟显得浑浊,茶显得苦涩,酒显得昏迷。虫声是单纯的,它引起的回忆也是单纯的,像虫声一样的单纯、清晰。从虫声里,我看到了自己伴随着虫声而踩出的一个历史足迹。

⑺那是多灾多难的童年的秋夜。高梁高,红了梢;谷子黄,弯了腰;豆叶苍,干的荚。夜色把它们抹成一片黑影,失去了白天的光彩。一领破席,半截搭在坟脚跟,半截拖在坟前的光地上。一卷高梁叶当枕头,被单子隔露水,挡寒霜,我坦然地睡在破席上。周围是谷子,再远是高梁,藏在这里最安全。在家里谁敢阖上眼?一声枪响,鬼子大概又下乡;一声犬 吠,可能汉 * * 又翻墙。躺在孤坟地里,心不乱跳,不惊慌,远望着碉堡顶上阴森的探照灯,耳听着沿路电话线像狼发狠的呜呜声,既盼夜长,又想天亮 。自从日本鬼子“进入”了家乡,民族的灾难使儿童也得离娘睡坟地,更有的被送上了屠场。我曾差一点上了屠场,所以从此不再敢留恋温暖的被窝,只得去睡露冷霜寒的坟场。坟场也成了我开始认识生活的课堂。

⑻坟场,在我幼小的心灵中,曾经是最恐怖的地方。晚上,小朋友在村头上玩,有时碰上阴天,会突然看到野外有一闪一闪既不绿又不蓝的微弱的光。老人们迷信,当然不会像现在用科学的观点去解释,“那是磷火”,而是说那是“鬼火”,是活无常挑着灯笼办案的,或者说是他们在打火抽烟。小朋友们听了只觉得头发竖,心发怵,赶快跑回家,蒙上被子。被子里头好像还一闪一闪的亮,闭上眼睛,仍然亮。

⑼我第一次就是心惊肉跳扯着大人的衣襟到坟头边去睡觉的。躺下就是睡不着,老觉得坟里有动静。

⑽坟里有动静了。不是朽骨翻身,不是会变美女的狐狸精,不是能变白胡子老头的黄鼠狼,而是动听的蟋蟀声,“唧唧唧……”啊,多么亲切的声音,喜人的声音!听到坟里的蟋蟀叫,我真想去捉它。可是一想,又害怕了。听养蟋蟀的“老玩家”说过,坟里的蟋蟀最厉害,它是在人的头颅里长大的,左眼孔进,右眼孔出,要捉可难了。搬着人头骨捉个蟋蟀,我还没那种胆量去试试。

⑾不捉也好。蟋蟀也是成对的,捉了公的,岂不拆散了它们的家?如果它们也有“虫族感”,不把捉它们的人当作最大的仇敌才怪呢,正像我们仇恨到处捉我们的日本鬼子那样。还是让它自由地叫罢!只有最自由的声音,才是最美最好听的声音,让不自由的人听了,才不会忘记对自由的追求与向往。

⑿以后,我就经常一个人下地睡坟脚了。躺下身来,要是听不到蟋蟀的叫声,反而更感到寂寞,寂寞到有点怕。一听到“唧唧唧”的叫声,心情立即轻松坦然,在虫声伴奏中进入梦乡。年年如此,不知不觉过了好几年。

⒀仍是一个夜里,我睡醒了一觉,睁开眼看看天,看看星,半夜刚过,正想再入梦乡。突然一阵枪响,碉堡上的探照灯灭了,紧接着从那黑洞洞的怪物里一股火光冲天而起,越烧越大,然而却没有听到像现在电影上那样的“冲啊!杀啊”的喊声。火光尚明,人却已去,一场哑巴仗,把鬼子的据点给“端”了。我再也没有入睡,披上被单,扔下破席,抬起头,挺直腰,一步一个响声地走回家。抗日游击队结束了我睡坟头的梦。再也没有机会睡在那里静听蟋蟀的鸣声了。

⒁第二天,太阳还没出来,挎土布背包的区干部就出现在街上,一声动员,老乡们就拿起家伙扒碉堡。我也跟着去搬砖头瓦块。沟填平了,碉堡扒光了,烧死了的敌人就地埋在碎砖烂瓦里。这里两三年没有长好庄稼,可是,每到秋天夜里,却传出了阵阵蟋蟀声。然而,又长起来的比我小的小朋友都不到那里去捉,大人对他们说,那都是鬼子汉 * * 变的。谁还喜欢?

⒂几十年转眼过去了,我也年过半百。看到日本有些怀旧的家伙仍然在重温几十年前“进入”中国的梦,引起我对蟋蟀声的特殊敏感,唤起我对童年的回忆。于是,我宁肯相信那碉堡遗迹下的蟋蟀声,是有罪的侵略者的思乡哀鸣,不管过了多少年,仍然没有变。应该寻找出这些声音,录下来,放给那些重温旧梦的人听。如果他们要重新“进入”,肯定也会变成瓦砾下的蟋蟀,而我们的娃娃们却绝不会再去睡坟头。

     Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let's make believe (假装;虚构) it is about sixty years

from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.

     Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as

it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the

beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is

provided for entertainment (娱乐) of young and old.

     What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven't yet started to take on heir (继承) supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may be some day. But many

foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green

plants.

     Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago,

most of our planet's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer

destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.

     Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible

to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.

     People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the

number of animal decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in

our bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to

get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more.
