永恒的托尔斯泰

曾经让我激动的小说可真不少,其中当然有托尔斯泰的《复活》和《安娜•卡列宁娜》。而后来,我怎么就那么强烈地喜欢上了海明威?他那貌似枯槁的短句竟有那么丰腴的蕴藏,我甚至感到一世界的作家数他最有魅力。还有总是穿了破衣服拍照的福克纳。还有鲁尔弗,还有日本的川端康成,在图书馆里吸了一辈子灰尘的博尔赫斯……托尔斯泰怎么竟显得模糊了?曾经“看山是山,看水是水”,后来却“看山不是山,看水不是水”,现在又终于“看山是山,看水是水了”了。仔细想想,大师是谁,海明威还是福克纳?川端还是谷崎润一郎?心里忽然明白过来,真正的大师应该是托尔斯泰,那个长着大胡子身穿布衣经常和农民一起耙草的伟大的托尔斯泰。

现代作家如海明威、卡夫卡、马尔克斯,怎么着都觉得散碎了点,思想让人捕捉不住,令人激赏的往往只是对人生或社会的展示,那怎么能让人心悦诚服?毕竟,文学不只是展示。仅此一点,海明威怎么能和托尔斯泰比?有人说,托尔斯泰是一面“镜子”。托尔斯泰怎么能仅仅被说成是一面“镜子”?

是什么让我们觉得托尔斯泰好像是一座山,他笔下的人物总是弥漫着浓浓的忏悔之情,不是白种人或黑种人或黄种人的忏悔,而是人类的忏悔?为什么他的小说能让人听到深深的叹息,感觉到对人类灵魂的无情鞭挞?难道这一切不是基于对人的深深的爱?塔吉雅娜•托尔斯泰娅这样回忆她的父亲:“有一次在雅斯纳波良纳,父亲忽然心血来潮,要大家说出人生的三个愿望。父亲想出了两个——爱一切人,被一切人爱。”现代派作家少的是爱,多的是技巧,然而文学毕竟不是技巧的展示会、语言的杂耍或叙事的杂技。

读托尔斯泰,常常让人想到宗教。但把宗教淘洗一番,祛除世俗附加上去的荒诞,剩下的就是宗教美好的一面:净化人类的灵魂。这话太古老了,但托尔斯泰最动人之处正在于此。阅读托尔斯泰,你会觉得自己的灵魂是那么不干净,每一次阅读都像是一次净化,像是跳进清流洗了一次澡。据说田园牧歌是虚幻的,但难道许多现代派作品中的浮躁、失落、异化和颓唐能成为人类的精神营养?

我们有时会觉得托尔斯泰太像一位“教主”,然而他的劝谕总是通过“真正的小说”来实现的。小说就是小说,小说不是哲学,小说是入俗而不是说教。和托尔斯泰比较一下,萨特小说是不是太“非小说化”了?托翁总是不动声色地通过人物达到他的目的。真理从来都是浅近的,就像太阳,悬在你的头上,就那么一个圆,带给你光和热。读《复活》或《安娜•卡列宁娜》,你感觉到的是手法?语言?结构?全不是。这一切那么完美地综合着,任何一面都不特别突出,一切均水乳交融,以突出人物来传达作家所要传达的“教谕”。这才是大师,自然、大方、有力。在托翁面前,现代许多“实验性小说”是不是太喜欢花样百出,因而太有些小气?

文学上“寻根”的说法往往显得很可爱。我们的许多作家像不像一棵树,站在大地上却喋喋不休:“我们的根在哪里?”而暮年的托尔斯泰还对来访的朋友说起他正在写一本书:“我的余生不长了,然而生存一刻就是要工作一刻,我正在写有关政府和人民关系的书。”散步的时候,托翁常常会突然停下来,“一位老农,刚磨完了一把镰刀。”“托尔斯泰伯爵和他说了几句话,丢下手杖,一下子夺过镰刀,麻利地割着草以试一试刀刃。我们遇见两位香客打扮的老头,背着旅行袋,拄着拐杖,脚上缠着布片,快步走过。托尔斯泰叫住他们,说了一会儿话,又从怀里掏出钱包,给了他们一些钱。”真不知道托尔斯泰和两个老头说了些什么,想必不是“今天天气......哈哈哈”。他一生都努力地想使自己不要远离人民。

There was once a professor of medicine, who was very strict with the students. Whenever he took the chair on the exam committee(委员会), the students would be in fear , because he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave . A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him. At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again .
