     In the U. S.  people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don't know.  If you're sitting at

 a table with people you don't know, it's impolite to smoke without first asking if it will disturb (打扰) them.

     At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served cold water before you order. You

 may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill (续杯).

     Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing times for stores or restaurants, though

  they usually do make rules for bars.  Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.

     Servings (提供的食物) in restaurants are often large, too large for many people.  If you can't finish

 your meal but would like to have the food later, ask your waiter or waitress for a "doggie bag",  It may

 have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you're taking the food for yourself.

    Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have "Sunday dinner". This is

 an especially big noon meal.

    Tips are not usually added to the 'check (账单). They are not included in the price of the meal,

 either.  A tip of about 15 % is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave.  In some

 restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress

 brings you your change,

牛奶真的喝得愈多愈健康吗?

①牛奶是人们日常生活中喜爱的饮食之一。每年5月的第三个星期二,是“国际牛奶日”。喝牛奶的好处如今已越来越被大众所认识。虽说牛奶好处很多,但从上世纪80年代开始,关于牛奶“危害”的研究不断出现。去年,诺贝尔生理学或医学奖颁奖单位瑞典卡罗林斯卡医学院发表研究称,大量饮用牛奶会增加卵巢癌发病率。去年9月,日本山梨医科大学名誉教授佐藤章夫在《产业医学杂志》上撰文指出:芬兰人和瑞典人虽然比日本人多喝了4.5倍的牛奶,但却更易骨折;过量饮用牛奶或吃乳制品可能引发心肌梗死和脑梗塞。他还怀疑前列腺癌、乳腺癌等都与牛奶中的激素有关。这些不断提出的许多新的健康观念,提供给了我们另一种反向的思考——牛奶真的是喝得愈多愈健康吗?

②事实上,英格兰医学报刊在1992年7月30日,曾刊载了一篇卡尔兹莱诺医生的研究报告,报导中指出牛奶中有一个相似胰脏乙型细胞的蛋白肽,会激发第一型糖尿病的病症。北欧的瑞典学者,也曾经针对6万名38到76岁的妇女,连续追踪13年,发现每天饮用四杯以上乳制品的妇女,罹患卵巢癌的几率比每日喝二杯牛奶的人多出两倍,一天喝二杯以上牛奶的妇女,罹患卵巢癌的几率比较少喝或没喝乳制品的妇女又多出一倍。

2001年哈佛大学发表十一年的追踪报告指出,每天食用超过2.5份乳制品(一份等于240cc牛奶),比每天食用少于或等于0.5份乳制品的人,多上34%罹患前列腺癌的机会。

④2003年哈佛大学提出一份长达十八年的护士健康研究,明确地指出,多喝牛奶并不会降低骨质疏松症的骨折发生率。牛奶确实可以补充钙质,但是如果摄取太多动物性蛋白,反而会使牛奶成为加速钙质流失的幕后黑手

⑤2007年在渥太华举办的世界乳癌医学会,便有很多关于这方面的研究发表,因此萨缪尔·艾普斯顿博士更极力呼吁,各国政府应该正视乳牛施打生长荷尔蒙的问题。根据他在实验室中所做的结果显示,注射生长荷尔蒙的牛所挤出的牛奶含有一种IGF-1的生长激素,是导致乳癌的祸首;虽然正常牛奶中也有IGF-1的存在,但IGF-1的数值并没有很高,反之,如果乳牛有施打生长荷尔蒙,则可能让ICF-1在牛奶中的含量比正常牛奶高出40倍之多。

⑥此外,牛奶中含有一种叫做酪蛋白的蛋白质,人体很难将其消化完全,只有牛本身所具备的三个胃能够消化酪蛋白,因而对于牛奶的饮用,并非绝对的必要!如果想喝,也请以一小杯为宜。

⑦当然,如果真要留住骨骼,拼命喝牛奶或是补充钙片等是不够的!还得加上适度的运动,才可真正避免钙质的流失。

⑧因此,牛奶并不是喝的越多越好。除了牛奶之外,在我们日常饮食之中,也有许多食物可以代替,比如豆浆、发芽的豆类可以取代蛋白质;沙丁鱼、海藻及深绿色蔬菜中也有丰富的钙质;尤其豆类是骨骼所需矿物质最好的来源。
